The 2-day training course will equip delegates with the practical skills and confidence to create effective podcasts for both internal/corporate and external/public communication campaigns. - Information overload and fake news have had a negative impact on how people assimilate ideas and information. Long-form audio content in the form of a podcast is an ideal way to communicate complex information that can be listened to at work, whilst traveling or at home.
- Around 7.1 million people in the UK now listen to podcasts each week. That’s one in eight people and is an increase of 24% over the past year – and more than double over the past five years.
- Ofcom research found that half of listeners have joined the podcast wave in the last two years, most likely as a reaction against the “persistent noise” from fake news, click-bait journalism and social media algorithmic targeting.
- Intelligent long-form audio content is becoming increasingly popular worldwide as a content format.

How To Make An Effective Podcast Training Course (2-Day)
Day 1 – 9.30 am to 5.30 pm
- Introductions – you, me, what do you want from the training?
- Latest podcast statistics, trends, demographics, and research
- The 4 types of podcast:
- Talk Show – listen to an example, explores issues, host plus guests, questions that get guests responding with enthusiasm (give to them in advance), tone – CHIP (Conversational, Human, Interesting, Pace), Length
- Interview – listen to an example, explore an issue with an expert, questions to get guest thinking in advance, tone – CARE (Conversational, Authentic, Relevant, Empathic), length
- How To Guide – listen to an example, for L&D /behaviour change, one or more voices, clear and easy to follow, steps outlined clearly in a carefully written script, plain English, tone – SHARP (Simple, Helpful, Accessible, Relevant, Pragmatic), Length
- Public Service Announcement – listen to an example, for issues and crises, one or two narrators, urgency, tone – CAP (Concern, Action, Perspective), Length
- Group discussion on creating podcasts – thinking podcasts, listening to example podcasts, what works, aims and audiences, planning individual podcasts or series, types, content ideas, preparing and scripting, hosting and presenting, marketing your podcast
- Being an engaging host or guest on a podcast – voice, accent, pace and pauses, tone, pitch – high/low, emphasis.
- Delegates are shown and search across a variety of online sources to download royalty-free music and sound effects
- Delegates break into teams and devise a 3-minute podcast script/outline for either an internal or external target audience
- Delegates’ 3-minute scripts are recorded using Audacity and a Blue Yeti microphone. Delegates then listen and critique the “voice” of each podcast
- Delegates are then shown some of the Audacity capabilities to enhance audio, add music and sound effects
- Q&A – End of day one
Day 2 – 9.30 am to 5.30 pm
- Group Discussion – Recap of learning from Day 1
- Practical Session – Using their laptops and headsets each delegate records a 2-minute audio file using Audacity. They then use Audacity tools to crop, enhance and optimise the audio. They then select and add music and sound effects using Audacity tools. They then output the finished file in an MP4 format.
- Practical Session – Delegates go into pairs. Using their laptops and laptop microphones each pair records a 2-minute interview using Audacity. In pairs, they work together using Audacity tools to crop, enhance and optimise the audio. They then select and add music and sound effects using Audacity tools. They then output the finished file in an MP4 format. Delegates then listen to and comment on each of the interviews.
- Practical Session – Each delegate uploads their MP4 interview into their AudioBoom account. They then select and add an image file to the MP4 interview and share the interview podcast on their Twitter and Facebook accounts. Delegates then turn their AudioBoom account into a “branded” podcasting channel.
- Practical Exercise – Delegates devise a podcasting schedule/plan to enhance their current communications or PR strategy. Each delegate briefly presents their ideas to the rest of the delegates.
- Next steps – Delegates are shown a 4-week podcasting plan to help embed learning and are given access to a video e-learning library on mastering Audacity, Blue Yeti, and AudioBoom.

Caroline Black Caroline is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and is a highly experienced communications specialist who started her career in advertising with Publicis. She subsequently moved into PR consultancy and was a board director at the leading UK PR consultancy, Grayling.
Caroline is a CIPR trainer, lecturer, and moderator of the CIPR’s Advanced Certificate in Public Relations course. Caroline offers strategic communications consultancy designed to help people develop their communication and management skills. She has a special interest in presenting and speaking and influencing skills to improve individual and team performance. Her current clients include the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Caroline is accredited to use the Myers Briggs® Type Indicator and is a qualified coach and counsellor. Caroline is also the author of The Public Relations Practitioner’s Desktop Guide.
Andy Black Andy trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and his professional experience included BBC Radio drama, voice-overs, audio dubbing for feature films and script development. For the last 30 years’ Andy has worked in the software and information services sector. He has been Head of Digital for a leading PR firm, managed Honda’s social media monitoring, directed lead generation social media campaigns for Vodafone as well as training B2B sales and marketing teams in digital skills and social selling. Andy is a contractor to the UK Govt and trains diplomats at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in digital diplomacy.
